INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF PHILOSOPHY AND HUMANITIESPhilosophy, humanities and arts. Paths to reflect on democracy

April 19th and 20th, 2012

Purpose:

To reflect on democracy from the fields of philosophy, humanities and arts simply involves thinking about ourselves as people who build and make up a community. The Department of Humanities and Arts at the National University of Lanús (UNLa) would like to bring together the courses of study which belong to this division by organizing a meeting. The aim of this meeting is to shape, from a range of diverse knowledge and actions, the senses of the reality in which we live as citizens and inhabitants of a world demanding on an unprecedented scale our ethical responsibility in both thinking and action. Reflection as well as open and grounded discussion are expected to be the communication vehicle to bring new questions to light and provide answers to the current conditions of our existence.

Sessions outline:

These sessions seek to be a convening space to meet the following goals: (i) both lecturers and attendants will always have an active participation; (ii) all the lecturers will always have an audience to hold a debate.
To achieve this, there will be four round tables made up of four (4) lecturers of renowned background, coordinated by a moderator, who will play a key role in leading the debate process. The sessions will be held in the morning and in the afternoon on both days.
The lecturers of each round table will provide an answer to the issues detailed below, which are also the subject matter each round table will tackle. The main intention is to contribute to the debate concerning certain current issues to be initiated by a suggested question which must be related to the theme of this Meeting.
Apart from the invited lecturers, the sessions will be open to the participation of professionals willing to submit written communications about the general topic or any of the subtopics to be tackled by each round table. Their work, prior approval by the Meeting Academic Commission, will be published in a volume released by the National University of Lanús (UNLa) together with the full versions of the lecturers’ presentations.
The round tables will feature Argentine professors (both from the National University of Lanús and from other Argentine universities) as well as professors from other countries. The maximum time limit allowed for each lecture is twenty (20) minutes. Next there will be a ten-minute period for questions. There will be a brief break after a sequence of two lectures. Once the four lectures have ended, the moderator will lead the general debate focusing on the specific topic of the round table: (i) among the lecturers themselves, and (2) between the audience and the lecturers. The sessions start in the morning at 9:30 and finish at 13:00. In the afternoon, the sessions start at 15:00 and continue until 18:30 approximately.
If lecturers from other countries, lecturers from other universities and the attendants are willing to visit the UNLa campus located in the city of Remedios de Escalada, Province of Buenos Aires, they will be kindly invited to do so. The Meeting will take place in the City of Buenos Aires and the official venue will be the J. L. Borges Auditorium of the Argentine National Library.
